My name is Kellyn Shoecraft. I’m a League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructor, and I’ve been living and biking in Boston for nearly 20 years.
Growing up, I first felt the freedom that a bicycle could offer when I’d visit my grandmother in Florida and could explore her town independently on two wheels. When I moved to Boston as a young adult, I once again was empowered by the ability to travel beyond the confines of public transportation. I gave up my MBTA pass in 2008, and have since used my bicycle as my primary means of transportation ever since.
A year after my older child was born, I began to think about how I could safely get back on my bike with them in tow. I purchased my first cargo bike in 2018, and three bikes, and nearly 15,000 miles later, it’s been an incredibly enriching experience for me and my family.
I’ve been so excited to see how quickly cargo biking has taken off in Boston over the past 5 years and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. More bikes on our streets means better safety for all.
I currently ride a front-loading cargo bike, usually with my two elementary-aged kids (and lots of gear) on board.
